Chapter 2: Secrets 秘密 (Hiou)

We keep waiting…

Is it hope?

Secrets carry us…

Secrets damn us…

I can trust you… can’t I?

Kakashi has never been one to like the hospitals; in fact he hates them with a passion. So why is this famous Copy ninja in the hospital at 11 am on a Friday? Simple reason really… “It’s been a week, can I see her now?” The nurse on duty looked at him like she did every day for the last seven days. He had been coming to the hospital trying to see her, see Sakura. Each attempt to see her or even a glimpse of her has been thwarted by ANBU.

Tsunade had made good on her threat, he couldn’t get anywhere near her. His only hope now was to wait it out now. Staring at the woman before him his question was unanswered, “Well?” He demanded.

“Uh… you see…” She wouldn’t look him in the eye, something was up. She pulled out a medical chart and looked it over, “Sakura can’t have visitors yet, come back tomorrow.” Kakashi sighed loudly; he wanted to make sure she knew he was angry. This was the first time in the history of his career that he’s been told, no. “If it bothers you so much Kakashi-senpai you should take it up with the Hokage… I’m sure she would have some answers.”

Oh she did, she had the answers he knew this. But she was keeping him in the dark, unfortunately for him it lead him to believe that all his suspicions were correct. If they were as correct as he thought they were and his instincts are never wrong. Kakashi knew that he needed to start training her… now. Backing away from the counter he made for his exit, “Yeah I’ll do that.” Pausing briefly he wondered if he could sneak in if he was wearing an ANBU uniform… No wait I tried that three days ago, never mind.

Every plot every scheme that Kakashi had come up with, Tsunade had countered. Kakashi was not amused. He needed help but this was a delicate matter, he knew that he couldn’t go blabbering around what the greatest secret of Konoha was to just anyone… They needed to be trusted, someone he could count on… he sighed and realized the only person he could really trust in this type of matter was…

“Yo, Kaka-sensei!”

Him…

“Yo, Naruto.”

The blond looked over the man in front of him, “Are you sick? I mean you hate hospitals!”

Kakashi sighed, “No Naruto I was trying to see Sakura and was told no again.”

“Ouch… wait, Kaka-sensei…“ Naruto had a puzzled look on his face, at that moment Kakashi knew exactly what he was going to say.

“They are letting everyone else see her but me aren’t they?” Naruto nodded, Kakashi cursed under his breath.

“Why won’t they let you see her, it doesn’t make any sense.”

“It doesn’t matter, Naruto I need you to do something for me… Call it a secret mission.”

Naruto’s eyes light up like a Christmas tree, “Will I get paid?” The silver haired Jounin looked at him for a second, he sighed it was worth it.

“Yes, I’ll pay you. Raman for dinner for three nights, how does that sound?”

“OK you got a deal! Now tell me the details of my mission.” Naruto was thick, he was stupid, but above all he was loyal to his team and most importantly to his friends. Naruto listened to what Kakashi had to tell him, he understood. “Do you want me to give her a note or something?”

“No just tell her I need to see her right away.” Naruto nodded, “I’ll be outside her room just tell her to open the window.”

“Alright I’ll tell her, I mean I’ll have to be cryptic since there are guards…” Naruto’s eyes waned to the side and stopped around where Sakura’s room was. “Don’t worry I’ll do my best.”

“Thanks,” is the only thing Kakashi got in edge wise as the blond streaked off into the hospital. He could hear the nurses shouting at Naruto to stop running in the hospital; Kakashi did all he could to suppress the laugh in his throat.

Slowing down Naruto cruised his way though the halls of the hospital. He was excited, not only is he get to see Sakura-chan but he was going to get dinner for three days straight at his favorite Raman restaurant just by relaying a message to her. It did however make him wonder, why Tsunade-ba-chan wouldn’t let Kakashi see her. It must have to do with the severity of the situation, although he wasn’t really sure what it was that was so serious anyways… sure she couldn’t see out of her right eye, or that’s what he was told. That didn’t mean that she couldn’t be a Shinobi anymore. Coming up the stairs he turned left down into the next hallway. Whistling a little as he went, he couldn’t be more pleased that he was going to see his best friend again. That was… until he saw it.

Sprawled out before him were two ANBU guards, “What the…” Naruto came closer; the door of her room was open. Looking inside the two guards inside were also down for the count one was face down with his shoulder dislocated, the other bent over a chair precariously. “Oh shit…” His baby blue eyes darted around the room, nothing was broken and there was no Pink haired kunoichi in the room. “Sakura-chan…” pulling his head out of the room he looked around, there was no evidence that she had been there. Nothing was disturbed in fact there was no Chakra singles that she was even still in the hospital. Looking out the window of the hallway he saw that it started to rain, “I need to tell him…” Sprinting over to the window, Naruto ripped the curtains opened and jarred the window slightly. “Kaka-sensei!”

Kakashi was looking down at him, from his perch on the tree right outside the window. “What Naruto?”

“Sakura-chan, she’s not here.” From where Naruto was at he could see the Jounins eye widen. “What do we do?”

“Naruto go to Tsunade, I’ll try to find her.” The blond nodded closing the window and sprinting out of the room. “This is bad…”

-

Lifting his hitai-ate he looked around. She wasn’t near the hospital anymore, this he knew. With lightning speed he formed seals, “Kuchiyose no Jutsu” In the blink of an eye he was faced with his pack.

“Yes?” Pakkun asked

“Sakura is missing, we need to find her before she hurts someone or herself.” The small dog raised an eyebrow at him, he sensed urgency in man he’d call boss.

“Alright,” As quickly as they got there they left. Kakashi also left the tree at the hospital, the only place he could think of her going was some place of memory… sadly he didn’t know her all that well. Where would she go? Stopping in the middle of one of the rooftops of Konoha he looked around. If I was her... where would I go? Home? A friend’s house? Food? The idea flickered in his head, what if… turning on heel he moved to the most unlikely place for her to go, the Uchiha compound.

Dropping down into the compound he looked around, nothing seemed amiss. Ducking under the overgrown ivy he made his way into the small garden. He knew which house belonged to Sasuke; it had been years since these homes had been in use. Dust covered the porches and walkways, small spider webs clung to the corners and windows. Kakashi knew he needed to look for something out of the ordinary. Coming closer to the main doors of Sasuke’s home he looked them over, breathing deep he could smell her. She’d been there. Silently tapping the door with his fingers it came open. Kakashi crept his way into the large home, small footprints where imprinted in the dust covered hallway. They lead off to the bedrooms, masking his chakra signature he made his way in the direction of the tiny prints. Third door on the right… Sasuke’s room, the door was slightly a jarred there was no light in the room. Peering into the room there was no one in there, at least that’s what he thought. Gently opening the door, he braced himself for what might come… nothing. Moving into the room there was no one there. Draws and cabinets had been opened, old clothing strewn everywhere. The tiny window in the room was open, she had left.

Silently cursing to himself, he realized he was just steps behind her. The room was still warm with her presence; hauling himself out the small window he closed it behind him so that the rain wouldn’t cause further damage to the old home. Looking up at the cloud drenched sky he couldn’t help but wonder where would she go next? Standing there silently he listened, she had already adapted. He wasn’t worried about her adapting it worried him that she would do something reckless. Even if she was still there, Sakura made no sound, leaving no footprints in the dirt or grass. The best he figured is she had climbed on to the rooftops, pushing chakra to the bottom of his feet he was off again over the roofs. She was better then ever… it’s possible that she would surpass him. With the correct training yes she could indeed. But first he needed to actually find her. Suddenly stopping he looked down, Pakkun was there waiting for him. “Yes?”

“Bull found her, she’s at the memorial.”

“Thanks old friend.”

“Sure, you owe us some treats.”

Kakashi gave the best smile and half hearted chuckle he could, “I will, I suspect you saw then?”

“Bull did, be careful Kakashi…”

“Of course,” With a small poof the dog was gone, and so was Kakashi. Over the rooftops at record breaking speeds he knew the fastest way to get to the memorial from anywhere in Konoha… he should he goes there every morning. Once he reached it he stopped on one branch before the memorial surveying the area. She was here. He then spied her across the way a good ten feet from the memorial stone near the three logs. Ah right… this is a memorable spot for her after all, the formation of team seven. He watched her, she stood there apparently she didn’t even notice that he was there. Her hospital gown was backwards over her shoulders like a coat, under was a single black tee-shirt, no sandals or pants for that matter. It made him wonder for a split second if she was wearing panties… why did I think that?

Slipping down into the brush he got as close as he could with out startling her, her senses were heightened. “Come out, I know your there.” He stood; she turned to face him hiding her right side. Sakura’s big green eye stared at him. “Kakashi…” Her lips set into a pout, her left eye was watering. Sakura took a small step forward he found her in his arms in a split second, this sudden action made him loose all sense of responsibility… He wanted her to be there, he didn’t know why either and for whatever reason in that split second he allowed himself to lose his balance. Kakashi let her topple him over to the ground with her on top clinging to him with all she had. Laying there in the brush he couldn’t help but pat her hair. “Kakashi…”

“Yes, what’s wrong?”

“They… wouldn’t let me see you. I thought… that … if I came here, you’d be here.” Her voice seemed distant; there was something that bothered her. Her tiny frame shook slightly, possibly because she was soaked to the skin from standing in the rain.

“I was at the hospital waiting for you, I’m sorry it took me so long to get here.”

He could feel the smile on her lips, “You’re here now so that’s all that matters.” Her grip bit down on him, she wasn’t going to let go any time soon.

“Sakura, could I at least sit up? Or… maybe we should take this inside somewhere, we don’t need you getting sick.”

“I’m fine, never better.” She did ease up slightly letting Kakashi sit up and move the two of them almost in a crab walking motion under a tree only a few inches from where they fell, Kakashi leaned his back up against the tree letting Sakura sit in his lap. Once he was settled she clung him again like wet clothing to skin on a hot day.

“Sakura, may I look at your eye?” She buried her face in his vest shaking her head no. “Please, I need to know.” She shook even more, “Are you scared you might hurt me?” She shook her head yes, “It’s ok if you don’t will yourself to hurt me you won’t.”

“How can you be sure?”

“After all these years Sakura, have I once used my eye against you outside of sparing?”

“No…”

“Don’t you trust me?”

“Yes…” She pulled back slightly sitting up in his lap, her eyes were tear soaked he knew it was taking a toll on her already. Images are a powerful thing, especially if they are not your own feelings. She gently pulled the small medical eye-patch off her right eye. “I trust you, Kakashi. I trust you with my life.” Her eye was closed; there was a tiny scar under the center of the lid. It was the indentation he knew would scar, it was tiny though not even an inch. Her face was still puffy and slightly bruised, “Please… this needs to stay a secret, don’t tell Naruto or anyone...”

“I won’t tell, you have my word,” Kakashi whispered as she opened her right eye. He came face to face with reality, he was right his worst fear… history repeated. She had it, the Sharingan. Three small tomes spun gently in this kunoichi’s eye. His heart sank, looking at her. She was burdened with the same curse he had.  “Does it hurt?”

“No, its weird feeling… is it supposes to feel this way?”

“What way?”

“Like… you know something you shouldn’t.”

“I guess that’s one way of describing it. I have to ask, whose is it?” Sakura closed her right eye and leaned into Kakashi, he was slightly alarmed by her action but gently he put his arms around her. It was going to be hard for her to tell him, he understood how she felt.

“I haven’t told anyone, the ANBU couldn’t get me to tell them.”

“I see. Sakura, you going to accelerate with that eye…”

“I don’t want too…”

“You don’t have that option; you need to learn how to use it.”

“Will you teach me then?” She tilted her head up towards him.

“Yes, if Tsunade-sama lets me I will… even if she won’t I will. You need to know how, there’s no one else that can teach you.”

“There is…” She said lightly. Kakashi could feel the uneasy tone in her voice; Kakashi already knew what Sakura was going to say. “There are both still alive, Kakashi.” He nodded, I figured as much… “I’m going to tell you whose it is… again…”

“I won’t tell a soul even if they try to drag me from hell to get it.” She smiled at his words; she hadn’t smiled since waking up in the hospital four days ago.

“It’s Sasuke’s eye, his right eye. He… he… gave it to me, Itachi had...“ She whimpered slightly at the memory. Sakura’s sentences were staggered and extremely incoherent. But Kakashi listened anyways. “My eye … to get Sasuke to give up. I couldn’t see… I lost it. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t think. All I knew is there was a battle raging around me and I was useless. I heard anguished screams… the fighting had come to a halt… Sasuke was hovering over me. There was a couple of…“ Her breath and voice stammered she couldn’t bring herself to say what it was, “stuck in his body.” Kakashi gently patted her hair with his hand to assure her she was safe. “When I came too, both eyes opened. I could see Sasuke looking down at me. There was something wrong with his face… I knew what it was after he said ‘don’t say I never gave you anything’. He got up and left me there. I felt trapped… walls were coming down around me. The next thing I remember was the hospital.”

Kakashi remained silent while she spoke; she was telling him something that she hadn’t even told the Hokage. He felt surprisingly overjoyed and quiet powerful at that moment, he knew something that the almighty Hokage didn’t know and frankly he wasn’t going to tell her not even if she killed him and drug him back from hell to get the answer. He was satisfied knowing that he was right as well as knowing that Sakura trusted him. He felt something… it wasn’t a physical feeling, it was emotional. What is that?

Sakura had shifted in his lap to try to gain some warmth, “Sakura maybe I should take you home… or back to the hospital.”

She sat up and looked at him with both eyes, “NO! No hospital!” He threw his hands up in defense,

“Alright I understand no hospital.” She settled back down against him. Well… shit, now what? She’s not supposed to be afraid of hospitals… How is this going to affect her job? Putting his arms around her again, they just sat there under the tree as the rain came down around them.
