I love to present interesting ideas that make you think. What if? Indeed, this is what I am presenting to you. If you enjoy it, thank you for keeping an open mind. Chapter 1: Hope - 希望 (kibou)
Destiny calls us…
Hope betrays us…
Is there anything really to live for?
Or is it a sick and twisted joke,
Indeed…
The smell of blood clung to the air, filling everyone with an ill-boding feeling. All the Shinobi in the area searched, trying to find something amongst the ruins and havoc that appeared to be caused by chakra and lightning. Energy ion’s clung to the skin causing the hairs on ones arms to stand on end. What ever happened here was intense, you could almost taste the electric chakra mix in the air it was that thick, almost as thick as the smell of blood. The walls of the buildings lay crumbled and torn violently down around them; they kept searching franticly hoping that someone survived in this mess.
“I found something Kaka-Sensei!” called Naruto from the other side of the area. Gingerly jumping over the wreckage Kakashi’s eyes met with what Naruto had been pointing out. Down under where they were in a tiny crack in the ground about seven feet below, in the darkness he could see something… thin pink strands of hair tucked under some wreckage.
“No…” Jumping down into the small area where he saw pink strands of hair. He glanced at Naruto who also jumped down.
“You … you think… she’s under that?”
“No question about it, Naruto I need you to help me.” Naruto hesitated, “Now Naruto.” He nodded and summoned five clones of himself. Lifting the debris out of the way only to find her under it, however she had been securely tucked between two slabs of concrete. To Kakashi’s relief she was in all matter of speaking, alright. He knew however that she wasn’t from the way she laid on her side her left arm dangling behind her back like a broken doll, blood pooled around her face. Naruto summoned a few of more clones to hold the debris up as Kakashi slid under it and hoisted her out of the small hole in the ground. Naruto clone number ten gently pulled her out while Naruto clone number fourteen helped Kakashi out.
“Well?” Naruto asked dismissing his clones; he looked down at Kakashi with anticipation. Kakashi inspected her quickly, granted he was no medical-nin he did the best he could. Nothing seemed broken, or rather punctured the only thing that seemed injured was her right eye. Oh gods I hope she hasn’t lost her eye sight in her right eye. He thought with a grimmest. “Well?” Naruto asked again.
“I need Ino to come over here and inspect her, she seems fine but I want someone with medical experience to have a second opinion.” With a nod Naruto was off like a shot. A little while later Ino came down into the small area where Kakashi held Sakura, he held a blood soaked cloth to her face. Ino’s face dropped in horror.
“Oh my god let me see her.” Handing Sakura to her would-be best friend Kakashi leaned back looking into the night’s sky. Ino carefully looked over her. Gently she pushed healing chakra into Sakura’s eye. Over several minutes it was silent only the sounds in the distant of people looking for others emanated the silence before the two of them. After some time Ino looked up at Kakashi, “Her eye is fine, there’s nothing wrong. I’m not really sure why it was bleeding though almost like it had been severed and put back in. I mean I can see Sakura putting her own eye back in…” She paused; Ino looked like she was going to be sick for a second.
“Are you alright?”
She nodded, “Yes, sorry I’m still new to… this. Um... like I was saying, its possible that it was dislodged and she well… popped it back in.” Kakashi nodded, it wasn’t uncommon he knew Sakura was a strong kunoichi. Looking around he knew they really should get moving.
“Is she alright to transport back to the village?” Ino nodded, passing her friend back to Kakashi who carried her bridal style. Gently jumping out of the hole he looked around, the others were still looking for anyone else that would be in the wreckage. Hoisting her up higher he started walking off. Yamato jumped down next to him, his eyes seemed panicked, Kakashi replied to his friend, “She’s alright for now, any sign of Sasuke or Itachi?”
“None, I’m assuming they are both either still alive or …”
“One is dead the other dragged the body away.”
“Right, but that leaves me to wonder about Sakura then, why…”
“Did they leave her? If it was Itachi it makes sense, Sasuke on the other hand… I’m not so sure where his feelings are when it comes to her.”
“I see, shall I call off the search and head back to Konoha?” Kakashi nodded.
“Mm… yes, probably for the best, really. Seeing as we’ve been out here for a few hours and we’ve only found her. Have Hinata and Neji do a once over each as far as they can scan in the wreckage and boarders of the area.”
“Alright, I take it you want Sai and Naruto with you?” Kakashi nodded again. Yamato vanished in a poof of smoke and appeared over Naruto and Sai’s who sprinted over to Kakashi.
“I’m ready to move Kaka-sensei.”
“Hn…” Sai replied. The three with Sakura moved silently back to Konoha with urgent care. A half an hour later the three of them were joined by the other three teams. The group leaders Yamato, Gai, and Shikamaru came up to speak with Kakashi.
“Hinata and Neji did as you asked. Nothing, they even double checked. Not even a sign of chakra resonation. Which means he or they transported to a distance which they can’t track.”
“I see.”
“Kakashi how is she?” Gai asked with an almost panicked tone in his voice. He wasn’t one to show fear, but he wavered knowing that one of their own could be critically injured. Shikamaru remained silent; this was one of the few times he’s acted as team captain. So he wasn’t quite sure what to say or ask silence was the right choice.
“She’s unconscious; the bleeding has stopped, thanks to Ino.” Looking down at her he noticed that her right eye had puffed up. An enormous bruise took over the right side of her face. She’s going to hate that… He sighed, At least she’s alive.
-
It was going to take them at least two to three days to get Sakura back to their village. Ino had warned that it was probably best to stop and rest even if she was out; being jostled around for an extended period might injure her. It was also a good idea to change the bandaging on her eye every few hours or so. Kakashi agreed, however he had a stigma about him. Whenever they stopped he wouldn’t let go of her, no matter who tried to take her from him… even Naruto.
Most of the team disregarded it off as him being over protective of the young girl, there was something more to it. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong and he wanted to be there when she woke no matter where it was. It bothered him that only her eye was injured, not the rest of her body. There were no visible markings as in… almost as if… she’d been healed prier and her eye was the only thing that wasn’t healed. There was concern for this, why would the attackers heal her to prime but then injure her eye? It made no sense. Unless there was more to it, there had to be more to it. Ino had said her eye was there and intact, but is that really the case? He felt the pang of curiosity cross his mind, what if? He couldn’t help himself, shifting on the ground where he sat he pulled her closer to him. Gently he lifted the bandages over her right eye. There was a tiny indentation in her face that might scar if not treated sooner. What if, He gently slid his fingers over her right eye; his fingers grazed her eye lid pulling it back. Before he could get a good look there was a shout in his general direction.
“WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING KAKASHI!?” Ino stormed over covering her eye. “You could blind her!” His eyes snapped up to her face, realizing what he had done.
“… Sorry.”
“Geez, I would have thought you would be more sympathetic to her! Don’t do that again, or else!” She screamed at him, but she wasn’t looking at him. Ino was re-applying the bandages to Sakura’s eye. Getting up from where she was Ino was grumbling under her breath, “Crazy old goat.”
“I heard that.” He softly said not looking in her direction; he could see her in his peripheral vision she had sighed shrugging as if she didn’t give a damn. That curiosity still panged him, he wasn’t sure it was only a small glimpse… but her eye wasn’t green. Silly really, he knew damn well that in an injury like that the iris could make the eye look a different color, he knew this. He’d have to wait till they got back to confirm his suspicion. What if, still lingered in his mind, what if history is repeating? He shook the feeling off as he went back to caring for the sleeping girl in his arms.
-
Getting back to Konoha, he had to begrudgingly give up Sakura to the medical crew waiting for them at the gates. Tsunade had seen the look on his face when they arrived. She motioned for him to follow. “What’s going on? Quick run down while we go to the hospital, if you don’t mind.” He didn’t mind.
“She was the only one we found; there was no sign of either Uchiha. The only thing of physical note was her right eye. It almost seemed like it was planed for her to be lying where she was, almost as if he or they wanted us to find her under the rubble like that.” She looked at him, he continued. “Ino did an inspection of her eye and body, she believed that Sakura might have dislodged her eye and put it back in. However I have a different theory and I would like it if you could tell me if I’m right or wrong in this matter.”
As always the way he spoke was matter of fact and very direct. However there was certain urgency in his voice, he wanted confirmation on something very badly. Confirmation, that Ino had depraved him of out in the forest.
“What is this theory of yours?”
“Her eye might have been replaced.” Tsunade’s eyes grew wide wish disbelief that Hatake Kakashi would flat out say something like that. She understood where he was coming from, that is a big theory and in fact that is a good possibility, even if it was unlikely in any circumstance.
“I see. I will let you know my findings.” Kakashi couldn’t help but think that she was lying to him, after all something like this making its way back into Konoha after all these years would be a shock to the village. It also raised some rather interesting questions, whose eye is it? How did it actually end up in her? As well as who put it in her?
Upon reaching the hospital Sakura had been ushered to the emergency room. Tsunade looked at Kakashi, he’s worse for wear after all his ex-student was found in that condition. I have a lot of questions for her when she wakes. In fact I want to know why the hell she was out there alone. Tsunade smiled faintly at Kakashi, “We’ll get to work, there’s no telling how long it will be. Feel free to wait, or go home and get some rest.”
“Alright,” Kakashi made his way over to the bench near the room Sakura was in, “It’s alright if I wait then?” He sat down stiffly; Tsunade could tell he hadn’t gotten much sleep from the way he sat. Maybe he’ll find some sleep while we work on her. That’s all she really hoped, or maybe he’ll go home…
“Yes that’s fine; just don’t disturb anyone if you stay.” He nodded at her as she walked away. She entered the emergency room taking one quick glance back at Kakashi; I hope his theory is wrong.
-
He would wait for what seemed like hours, watching the different nurses go back and forth between the room and hallways. He sat there slouched back, his head resting on the wall. His hands in his pockets, waiting, he continued to wait… and wait… and wait. Until finally Tsunade came out of the surgery room, she was slightly surprised that he was still there. He stood up hastily moving over to her, she knew what he wanted to hear. Yet… the look on her face said something other then what the older woman said.
“Nothing is wrong with her eye. She won’t be able to use it for a few weeks, so she’ll have to wear an eye-patch.” She had flat out lied to him, he knew this but didn’t question her. “We’re going to keep her for a few days in isolation to make sure there isn’t anything traumatically wrong with her; also we need to ask her some questions clearly about the Uchiha’s.”
“Naturally, when can I see her?”
Tsunade shifted uncomfortably where she stood; it wouldn’t be easy to tell him. “A week,” She could see the pain in his eyes; he wasn’t going to settle for a week…. No, in fact he would totally protest it. He wanted to see her; Tsunade knew this especially the way he brought her in. He had been clinging to her with dear life attached to it. Former student or not he had some ‘feelings’ for the girl and was quiet put out that he couldn’t see her.
“Alright, a week then but I’ll be coming by everyday to see if it is otherwise.”
“Fair enough,” She smiled; he however didn’t reciprocate that smile. His eyes seemed hollow and his body language reviled nothing about what he was really thinking. This frightened Tsunade a bit; he might do something stupid… like break into her room to get his own answers. “Ah before I forget,” She said while walking back to where Sakura was, “I’ll be placing ANBU in her room and outside, she’s to be quarantined until we get answers.” That was her way of saying, ‘don’t even think about it’. She heard him sigh, she was right he was going to do just that. Looking over her shoulder to get an answer out of him, Kakashi was no longer standing where he was… only a small hue of smoke lingered. “I see… that’s your answer, I’ll have to up security more then.” She whispered to no one as she went back into the room where her apprentice was waiting for her.
